Chocolate Bird Nests Recipe

This Easter Phoebe has been so aware that something different is going on. She has become fascinated by all the big bright colourful boxes that have taken over the supermarkets as well as all the cleverly places cuddly toys.

I thought rather than letting her have lots of eggs and toys we’ve been baking, going for long Easter themed walks and making the most of having daddy Pig around. I do let Phoebe have the odd sweet treat, but this weekend I’ve just let her go for it, chocolate everywhere..I totally paid the price.

My favourite Easter treat has got to be the classic chocolate birds nests. It’s a great no bake for kids, the shredded wheat makes its fun as they can get involved with breaking it up, explore textures plus it helps their fine motor skills and encourages different Schemas developments.

Chocolate Easter Bird Nests

Chocolate Nests

Makes 12

Preparation time:  20 minutes

Cooling time: 1 hour

Ingredients

  • 75g unsalted butter, cubed and softened
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 250g milk chocolate
  • 2 tablespoons golden syrup
  • 5 Shredded Wheat bars about 100g
  • 1 Bag of Mini Eggs

Method

1.Line a 12-hole muffin tray with paper cases.
2.Melt the milk chocolate, coco powder, golden syrup and butter in a small glass bowl over a saucepan of gently simmering water.

3.Stir regularly with a wooden spoon until the mixture is completely melted and glossy with no lumps.

4.Break up the Shredded Wheat into small pieces in abowl using your hands.

5.Pour the Shredded Wheat into the chocolate mixture and mix with the wooden spoon until all the Shredded Wheat is covered in the melted chocolate.

6.Spoon the mixture into the 12 cases, dividing evenly. Use your index finger to create a well in the centre of each nest.

7.Add a few Mini Eggs to each nest or like Phoebe did, put them all into one nest! Leave to cool and in the fridge for 1- 2 hrs then enjoy.

Mini Eggs

Tip: You could use colourful jelly beans as an alternative to mini eggs and Cornflakes or Rice Krispies instead of shredded wheat.

I hope you enjoyed our recipe and I’ve inspired you to put your apron on and get messy. Do you have a favourite recipe you enjoy making with you’re family? let me know I’d love to hear it them.

  1. MMmm yours look lovely. I have had the misfortune of having some really bad ones once. I think I might have bought them at a school fair or something, but I do remember they were more shredded wheat than chocolate which was a bit disappointing to say the least!

I really need to do some baking or no-baking with Siena, I don’t think I’ve done hardly any and it makes me feel a bit guilty as I did loads with her big sister. Maybe I’ll get some shredded wheat tomorrow 🙂

One thing I tend to make (although make is probably pushing it, more a case of putting it together) is Oreo Truffles, very yummy and they make a great gift if you can stop yourself from eating them x

    1. The chocolate to shredded wheat ratio has got to be right, else your right you can have a dry and not so nice one. Good luck with the baking/no baking it really does kill a good hour or so, plus the decorating after another 20 minutes, it’s worth it but the thought of all the carnage can be off putting. Im just sucking it up and trying to relax with it all 😉 thanks for commenting X

    1. Thanks for hosting 🙂 she really enjoyed this one, mostly licking the spoon and I did laugh when she threw all the mini eggs into the one nest. Hope you had a nice Easter too X

  2. Lovely recipe! I love baking with my little one too so this is a fab little recipe to give a go. Shredded wheat seems to have taken over the traditional cornflake nests/cakes, they’ve been so popular this year! Emily #TwinklyTuesday

    1. Thanks It was my first time as an adult, so quote chuffed with the result. And I think my kitchen floor helped hide the shredded wheat mess. Thanks for hosting and the retweets X
